It's that time of year again — the Texas bluebonnets are blooming, and there is no better backdrop for family photos in the Hill Country!


Every spring, the fields around Dripping Springs, Bee Cave, and Lakeway explode with the most beautiful blue and purple wildflowers. For just a few short weeks, families have the chance to capture that iconic Texas look — kids running through fields, everyone in their whites and blues, golden hour light filtering through the flowers. It's genuinely one of my favorite times of year to shoot.


What Are Bluebonnet Mini Sessions?


Mini sessions are 20-minute outdoor sessions held at a location I select in the Dripping Springs area — typically a field with a beautiful natural bluebonnet patch. They're perfect for families of up to 5 people who want stunning seasonal photos without the commitment of a full session.

  • I usually shoot at Muleshoe Bend park in Spicewood, it is definitely  the most dependable place for bluebonnets!

Tips for a Great Bluebonnet Session


  1. Book early. Bluebonnet season is short — usually just 2-3 weeks in late March through mid-April — and spots fill up fast. Once the flowers peak, they're gone quickly.
  2. Wear the right colors. Light neutrals, soft blues, creams, and whites photograph beautifully against the vibrant purple-blue blooms. Avoid busy patterns and bright neon colors.
  3. Come at golden hour. Bluebonnets and most wildflowers grow in full sun, so the best lighting is when the sun is going down, since we don't have help from shade.
  4. Let the kids be kids. Some of my favorite bluebonnet shots are of little ones running, rolling, and exploring. Candid > posed every time.
  5. Don't stress about the flowers. Some years the bloom is thicker than others. I scout locations ahead of time to make sure we have the best patch available.
