It's officially senior photo season in the Texas Hill Country — and if you haven't booked your session yet, now is the time. Whether you're a senior at Dripping Springs High, Lake Travis High, or anywhere across the Austin area, your senior portraits are one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments worth getting right. As a photographer who's been working with families and seniors since 2008, I want to share everything I've learned to help you go into your session feeling confident, prepared, and excited.
1. Book Early — Senior Season Fills Fast
Fall and spring are the busiest time of year for senior photos in Austin.
Usually seniors book a fall session or a spring session, and often both! Weekend dates go fast due to holiday photo season, and in the spring bluebonnet sessions, spring break, Founders weekend (drip!) do not leave many open weekends. Its never too early to book!
Talk with your senior to see if they want photos done in the beginning of the school year, they may need them for yearbook reasons.
The good news: if you're reading this, you're already thinking ahead. Reach out now to lock in your spot — sessions typically book out 3–4 weeks in advance during peak season.
2. Choose Outfits That Feel Like You
Outfit selection is one of the biggest things seniors stress about, and it doesn't need to be that complicated. Here's what I always tell my seniors:
Bring 2–3 outfit changes. This gives you variety for your gallery and lets you express different sides of your personality — maybe one casual, one dressed up, and one that represents a sport, hobby, or passion.
PROPS! I am loving all the college flags, Letterman jackets, caps and gowns, personalized boots and flower bouquets. Bring them! and when in doubt, bring it anyway!
Wear what makes you feel confident. I've seen seniors show up in cowboy boots, soccer jerseys, and everything in between. If it's authentically you, it will make for a better photo. Don't dress for what you think looks good on Instagram — dress for what makes you feel like yourself.
Texas tip: dress for the heat, then layer. Even in spring, afternoons in Central Texas can be warm. Bring layers so you have options. We can always shed a jacket, but we can't add one if you don't have it.
3. Pick a Location That Matches Your Vibe
One of the best parts about shooting in the Austin and Hill Country area is that we have incredible variety — from golden limestone creek beds to wildflower fields to the gritty energy of downtown Austin. Here are some favorite location types for senior sessions:
Hill Country Nature: Open fields, cedar trees, and limestone outcroppings give that quintessential Texas feel. Perfect if you love the outdoors or just want something timeless and beautiful.
Creek & Water Settings: There are gorgeous spots around Bee Cave and Lakeway with natural water features that create a relaxed, dreamy vibe — especially great for late afternoon sessions.
Wildflower Fields (Spring Only): If you book in March or April, we may be able to incorporate bluebonnets or other Hill Country wildflowers. These sessions are always stunning and always popular — another great reason to book early.
Urban Austin: If you're more of a city person, downtown Austin has great texture — murals, architecture, string lights, and street life that creates an editorial feel completely different from the Hill Country.
Not sure which fits you? We can talk through it — I love helping seniors find the setting that feels right for them.
4. Prep Your Skin and Hair (But Keep It Natural)
Senior photos look best when you look like a polished version of yourself — not a completely different person. A few simple tips:
- Skincare: Start hydrating your skin a week or two before your session. Drink water, moisturize, and avoid anything that might cause a reaction right before.
- Hair: Go with a style you wear regularly and feel comfortable in. If you're getting a blowout or professional styling, do a trial run beforehand so you know what to expect.
- Makeup: Keep it classic and slightly more defined than everyday — camera-ready often means slightly more contrast. Avoid glitter or anything that reflects harshly in the sun.
- For guys: Get a haircut 1–2 weeks before (not the day before!) so it has time to settle naturally.
5. Bring the Things That Make You You
Props aren't required, but they can add a lot of personality to your session. Think about the things that define your senior year:
- Your sport uniform or equipment
- Your instrument
- Your letter jacket
- Your car (yes, seriously — cars make great backdrops)
- Your dog (always a yes from me)
- A meaningful book, jersey, or piece of gear
Just bring what feels natural, not forced. We don't have to use everything — it's good to have options.
6. What to Expect During Your Session
A typical senior session with me runs about 1.5–2 hours. We start at a location that works for your chosen settings and outfits, and I'll guide you through posing the entire time — you don't need to have any experience in front of a camera. Most seniors tell me afterward that it felt way more comfortable than they expected.
I typically deliver a full gallery of edited images within 2–3 weeks of your session. You'll be able to download your favorites, order prints, and share directly from the online gallery.
